PEM Awarded Prototype Gearbox for DARPA’s “No Manning Required Ship” (NOMARS) Project

PEM is pleased to announce that we have secured a new contract with Serco Inc., a primary contractor for DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), the research and development agency of the US Department of Defense responsible for developing new technologies used by the US military.  Serco NA secured the design for DARPA’s “No Manning Required Ship” (NOMARS) project at the conclusion of Phase 1 last year and then immediately moved into Phase 2, during which they will finalize ship design, build the ship, and work through a series of rigorous testing activities before taking it to sea for a three-month demonstration event.  NOMARS is a first-of-its-kind unmanned surface vessel (MUSV) that can go to sea and perform missions with unprecedented reliability and availability while carrying a significant payload.  In April of 2023, Serco selected PEM to design and manufacture the prototype gearboxes that will power the propulsion / propeller system on the prototype ship, which has been named, Defiant.  We are excited for this new endeavor as we strive to continue expanding our footprint in the US Department of Defense by providing reliable, high quality heavy-duty gearbox solutions.
